Well worth the journey …

This picturesque wine village lies 75 minutes by road east of Wellington via the spectacular Rimutaka mountain road, and about three hours drive south of Hawkes Bay.

The tiny town (pop. 1300) is hemmed in by 24 vineyards, most within walking distance from the hotel. Start your wine trail with an introductory tasting at the Martinborough Wine Centre, then follow the hotel’s specially designed route through the vineyards. Or indulge in summertime romance on a horse and carriage ride round the wineries.

Explore the dramatic coastline south of Martinborough past the extraordinary Puruatanga pinnacles, the setting for a scene from Lord of the Rings. Discover the surreal fishing village of Ngawi, the seal nursery at Cape Palliser and climb 258 steps to the lighthouse to spot the South Island mountains across the churning Cook Strait.

Drop into the pub at Lake Ferry for the freshest whitebait and old fashioned fish and chips, before returning for a malt in front of the hotel’s fire or a chat with the locals in the Settlers Bar.
